term used at the end of the Civil War for northerners that came to the South to get as much as they could and make cash off the misfortunes of the southerns and they were usually the ones that had carpetbags hence the term carpetbagger,usually a term that implies dishonest low down people

I think it's an old word from the South describing the Northerners who came down after the Civil War to aid reconstruction; they always carried carpet bags. It might have been later used as a term for door to door salesmen.
