Definition: Having identical alleles for a single trait.

For example, the gene for seed shape in pea plants exists in two forms, one form or allele for round seed shape (R) and the other for wrinkled seed shape (r). A homozygous plant would contain the following alleles for seed shape: (RR) or (rr).

Homozygous= the same allele at both loci for a particular gene.

So, using the common example of blood type, somebody with type O, which has to have the genotype ii, is homozygous. If for instance they were type AB (genotype IaIb), then they are heterozygous.

Matthew: it isnt true that an organism must be diploid for it to be homozygous, it just has to be not monoploid. Lots of plants have bizarre plodies- tetra and octaploid plants are not uncommon...

Homozygous means having a matching pair of alleles (genes) for a trait. In other words, having either a pair a dominant alleles or a pair of recessive alleles. All phenotypes that are recessive are homozygous.
Homozygosity occurs in diploids only.

Punnett Squares-related. If something is homozygous it means they are the same, like homosexual people like the same gender. Heterozygous is something is different, such as heterozygous people liking the opposite gender.

I think it means having 2 of the same alleles for each gene, and heterozygous means having one of each allele for one gene.
