You can check the weekly ads from the retailers at http://www.salescircular.com. Nearly every laptop sold these days has wireless. You won't find firewire at your price point but you can add it via pcmcia or express card (depending on what slot your laptop has).

I picked up a decent little Gateway a couple weeks ago at Circuit City for $600. Has 100 GB hd, dualcore intel T2060, 1 gb ram, ATI Radeon Xpress 200M video (shared video ram). Wireless abg, ethernet, 15.4 in widescreen. Vista Home premium.
As far as games go, it does load and run Sims2, won't run Second Life.

I bought this one even though I'm an employee for another company. It was a better deal than what I could get even with an employee discount.

A laptop that will do that will be $1,500+.

A desktop can do that for $600.

Games and video editing are not a laptops forte as they'll both produce massive amounts of heat. You'll also want two seperate 7200rpm hard disks for video editing.

Okay, this is the cheapest dual core with a real video card that will play games:

This is probably the best laptop for you:

If you look at the ads every sunday you might be able to find a dual core with a gig of ram for $600, but that's pushing it. And with Vista, the minimum RAM you need is a gig...laptops are outrageous if you want them to have some balls.

Go to eBay.com and shop around.

May I ask how much you willing to spend on a laptop? I admires your ethusiathum on tech products but laptop costs lot of money especially for holding extra memory and of course free pies . :)
