My upstairs neighbors have elephant toes, and I hear them clomping around all evening. I have a voice in my head cycling through the four major categories of bacteria.

Everyone talks to themselves. Some people more than others. The issue really comes with how much you talk with your self and are you listening to the weird stuff your mind generates. This is one of the sad things older folks go through when they are by themselves and don't have anyone to talk to except themselves. What their self says and how bad it can be depends alot on how much the person blames the world for their problems. This is not just unique to old folks... Anyone left alone too long can experience the same thing. The little devil on your shoulder is you responding to your problems. Alot of times it can be non-sensical.

i hear voices saying my name all the time. its quite annoying
or i just hear music playing when its not there
and my phone ringing when it doesnt.
