I just don't get why you would want to be called Native Americans. America was the name for this land given by Europeans and not your actual ancestors. I can see why the word Indian can be offensive though.

Depends on whom you ask. Many prefer Native American, due to the fact that Indians came from India. I prefer Indigenous American. I am a full blooded Indigenous American, 1/2 Navajo, and 1/2 Apache. I don't celebrate, I practice our culture and traditions. I teach, and I learn. For more information, do some research on the web.

Yes, I am a Native woman.

I prefer to be called by my tribal name or just plain Native. Indian is really a term used within the ethnic group. I don't think anyone really likes to be called Native American it is just a term the government uses. I think that many Native people would agree that we would prefer to have people know our tribal names, that would take a lot of education! Other good terms are indigenous and first nations.

I am Sioux (there are several bands of Sioux). However I grew up with the Klamath/Modoc tribes (in Southern Oregon).

I do celebrate some ceremony (ancient traditions) however its not generally appropriate to say more about it in this type of conversation.

First, call me by my name.
Second, by people, Muscogee.
Third, Indian. Why? I don't go for the "Politically Correct" term, besides we were called Indian a looooooooong time before Native American.
I celebrate the Green Corn Busk.

You bet there is. Always use the word native american, hate the word Indian when it comes to describe me. This word respectfully belongs to the people of India. Look up Columbus's mistake. Zacateco Nation. Zacateco Christian although I love to dance Native American style and I love bass.
