Each month a woman goes through a cycle of changes that allows her body to carry a child if she becomes pregnant. Lets start with the date that her period ends. From this date the inside of her uterus begins to grow fuzzy tissue and collect blood. (The uterus is the round organ that the baby will be carried in). This happens for about 14 days. After 14 days ovulation occurs due to a shift of hormones. Ovulation is an egg being released from her ovary (the female form of the testes) which then travels slowly down a tube (called the fallopian tube) that is attached to the uterus. This is the time when pregnancy can occur. If the egg becomes fertilized by a sperm it will attach to the fuzzy blood filled wall of the uterus to grow for the next nine months. If fertilization does not occur, after another 14 days, the egg along with all of the fuzzy tissue and blood gets flushed out of her body in the form of a period so the process can start all over.
