Yes, fun to play, but......
no ice, no checking, not REAL hockey .... too much of the nuance of the sport is missing. God I love the smell of the ice rink when you first step into it after a long break. Can't beat it.

It's underrated, but also, it's really a niche sport. If you think about it, it's not really something that is prone to catch on where ice hockey is as readily avaliable. I grew up in Southern California when roller hockey was really starting to catch on, and I played street hockey, and in roller hockey leagues for 11 seasons. I now have moved back to Western New York in June 2005, and I have found that roller hockey is played, but it seems to be a fill in for when people aren't playing ice hockey. In Southern California, it's hard to play ice hockey because there are so few places offering it, so roller hockey caught on more there.
It's close to ice hockey in certain ways, as in there is a puck and stick and some sort of skate involved, and most of the equipment is the same, but it, like you stated, lacks the hitting of ice hockey. Also, roller hockey doesn't have an icing rule, and a lot of leagues also don't have offsides rules. The floor is more open, being it is 4-on-4, but that doesn't mean it will catch on as ice hockey has.
I think, given the right markets, roller hockey can be successful, like when ice rinks aren't open, as happens with some in this area, or when you want to play hockey but don't want to travel (again, closest ice rink to me in the spring and summer is Amherst Pepsi Center, which is 25 or so minute drive), so roller hockey is there to fill that want.
sk88in- That's a half truth. I knew plenty of roller D-men who could also read plays and block shots. In addition to playing goalie for my school's Varsity team, I played JV as aa defenseman and was quite adept at blocking shots. I also knew others that did too, and it helped the transition game being able to have shot blockers on the team.
Edit - Don't make fun of the roller hockey uniforms. Their form fits their function, and since roller hockey players don't really need and hip padding (it's recommended but not required for anyone except goalies). Roller hockey players don't wonder whats up with the leg warmer-looking hockey socks.

Roller is alot of fun but nothing like ICE!!!! You don't have all the rules to live by such as icings and off-sides. It is a much higher scoring game but it is all offense. If your a great roller D-man it just means you score alot from the point but on ice you know how to read a play and can trap and block shots. Roller wont catch on because its not as popular as ice, I mean you never see it on TV. And you have die hard hockey players that are closed minded and think that unless its on ice its not hockey! Also the speed of ice is alot faster than roller. Its a matter if friction and you will never be able to go as fast on wheels as you do on blades. It is fast don't get me wrong but there are ice players clocking 40 mph+ and I really haven't seen roller players going that fast even when the RHI was around.

Much FASTER than ice hockey? I think not.
Roller hockey is an ok substitute if you don't have an ice rink, but it's nothing like the real thing. Also, the gear and jerseys look silly. Are those motocross pants or cooperalls?

Ice Hockey is better because: There is checking You need more skill Not as dangerous to fall 10000000 times more fun There are a lot more, but I can't really name them because they would take up a whole page. I have played both and Ice Hockey is definitely better

To play, it's great. But to watch it's not even close to ice hockey. Also, my problem with it, personally, is it's completely wrecked my ability to ice skate. Stopping and starting is so different on wheels that it makes you a little gun-shy when it comes to skating hard on ice blades. Seriously, try skating as fast as you can on wheels, then throw your skates side-ways. You skid a looong time. :)
