I know we've moved past floppies, but I was making sure that a floppy didn't have important information and I got it stuck in the drive. I wrenched out the disk, but the metal spring-loaded clip is still inside. How do I get it out?

Floppy drives are archaic, but that means they're also pretty sturdy. Get yourself a bright flashlight and some jewelers' screwdrivers (or other teeny tools), peek inside the drive, and try to finesse the metal out of the drive. If you break it then it's really no great loss as new floppy drives can be had for less than $10.

Also, if you're at all comfortable with opening up your PC you could always pull out the floppy drive and simply pop off the cover to remove the debris. I've taken many of them apart and it's really not all that hard.

What was it? It's hard to say without knowing how it's stuck in there. You could try holding the 'door' open with your little finger and tipping the computer forward, maybe it'll fall out. If that doesn't work you have 3 choices: 1. take it in for service and they can dismantle the floppy drive, extract the 'thing' and put it back together so it works. As cheap as floppies are now they may just replace it and be done with it. 2. use tweasers and a flashlight to carefully find and pull whatever it was out (if you hit the wrong thing you may be taking it in for service anyway and this will probably scratch up whatever you got stuck in there trying to grab it) 3. get a external floppy drive to use and put tape over the one that has something stuck.

The way to get that out, is to disassemble the floppy drive, if you are leary of doing so, a new drive is cheaper than a repair bill will be.

Remove it from the computer and lift off the tin top cover, then the item inside will fall out.

Very simple to do.

It took you half as much time to type your question as it would take to resolve the problem.

VERY carefully... :)

Since I am not comfortable opening up my own computer, I would take it to a person who is... Check "computer service/repair" in the yellow pages...

Good Luck!
