It's playing with someone's emotions. It's not right. Sweet or not, to give someone hope then dash it all for a laugh? Do you think that's funny?

Yes, very mean and unethical. Dishonest as well. In other words, lying.
Jokes made at the expense of other people's pain aren't funny, they're just mean.
