The Basque region is not a country, but an area. The Basques have a language that is unrelated to anything else spoken in Spain, so where they come from originally is unknown. They have their own distinct ways of doing things, and have fought for their independence for a long time.

The Basques are a people (nation, in political terms) in NW Spain. Distinct culture, language, history, etc. Some even say they're connected to the Celts.
