The importance is not on cables but on connectors

use DVI, HDMI, or component (R/g/B) ports for HD
Use composite (yellow) or S-Video for Standard Def.

You can use old composite cable (yellow plugs for video) as component cables (Red/gree/ or blue). The plugs on the cables are for easy identification only.

So, if you only have one set of component input ports on the TV and no other HD ports, then the Xbox output will have to be SD.
In that case, you may want to buy a component switch.

You should have the coax coming out of the wall into your tv, then just the HDMI out from the box into your tv. Then be sure you have the cable box HDMI output set up to 1080i, 16:9, and your tv set to 16:9. If you have both a coax and an HDMI going into the tv, that would be causing the problem. Just use HDMI. And often, with Samsung tvs, component (red/green/blue) work better than HDMI.
