Did you give the gift in order to control that person? If they returned the gift, they were not allowing you to control them; therefore you became "enraged". Enraged is a big word. It means "to make extremely angry". There are many reasons for returning a gift:
1. not wishing to be controlled
2. the gift was inappropriate (too expensive, too big)
3. the gift represented a mutual care for one another that does not exist
4. there was not a need for the gift and the hope was that you would give it to someone who really needed it.
For you to become "enraged" is not healthy and is an indicator that you need professional help. Please get some counseling on your experience as it represents a problem that is larger than simply having a gift returned.
Added: Dear NIN related question guy--I didn't mean to offend you. Yes, I was probably over the top; but the use of "enraged" caught me as it is a powerful word that suggests something more than being upset or angry or hurt. Most people would not be "enraged" over a returned gift unless there was something more going on...which we'll never know unless you open the question to further discussion. When I hear "enraged", the next word I expect to hear is "murder". Therefore, not wishing you to ruin your life or the life of another, it seemed to me the best solution was counseling. My intention was not to be rude but to be helpful. I hope you didn't experience a second "enragement".

Not enraged, no, but if they do it more than once, I stop giving them gifts -- not as a punishment or anything, just because it saves me money and them the time it takes to return the gift. It's just easier.

No. I only get gifts for my friends, which are people I should know. If they return the gift that means I failed to get them what they wanted. Then I am only mad at myself for not knowing them well enough to get the right gift.
Unless of course they got two of the same thing. Then I'm not even mad at myself cause I got them the right thing if they're only returning one, and now they can use the money or credit to get something else.

It would be in poor taste to return it to me...I would not be offended if they returned one or two gifts....after that, I wouldn't give them anything else...I'd figure that either I didn't know them well enough to pick out a decent gift, or they are someone who isn't happy with anything, so why bother?

If you gave them a gift in the first place you wanted them to like it right? Well if they don't and they have an opportunity to get something that they do like then you should be happy that you gave them a good present even if you didn't pick it.

No, I want the person that I buy for to be satisfied. Exchanging the gift, beats them throwing it in a drawer, or bottom of the closet.

Not at all. The way I see it, either I picked an inappropriate gift or they were double gifted (they received the same item from someone else). Once I give it to them, it's theirs to do with as they wish.

No. I'd want them to be happy with what they got. Better returned/exchanged than trashed or used and hated.
