I had an incredible thing happen this evening. I work in downtown Detroit and due to the winter storm, it was taking me hours to get home. My car died, AND about 10 mintues later, my cell phone. I was with a dead car in the worst area of Detroit...and I'm a 5'4" white woman.
A tall black homeless man came up, helped me out, and stayed with me for over 40 minutes until a friend came. I had no car, and no cell phone at that point. This man protected me. He asked for nothing in return even though he HAD nothing more than the clothes he was wearing.
I am so glad that I have not been racist, because this man showed me how beautiful people can be in this world, no matter what you have, where you're from, etc. I bring up the race issue because there is quite a divide here in Detroit with blacks and whites. I took this man, got him a hotel room, & gave him as much money as I could.
This is a true story, & happened less than 3 hours ago. I will be forever changed by his kindess

uria702, I paid cash for the room. I didn't leave credit card and it was hardly the Hilton. Seems like you're due for a little kindness yourself.

Actually no because people are so freakin paranoid becuase of all the **** they hear on the news. At dusk in February , before I had a cell phone. My car died in Auburn Hills,MI near the Chrysler building on the M-59 freeway . It started smoking , so I got all of my **** out of it and waited for someone to pull over NO ONE did . I even jumped up and down on top of my car NO ONE stopped. So I started walking to look for a pay phone, I walked all the way through the Chrysler complex . I saw a bunch of reindeers looking at me :) they were cute tho.I comtemplated crossing I-75 but thought better of it. I walked all the way into some town after about an hour I found a pay phone , called my mom collect. All becuz people are selfish and can't be bothered or are paranoid. I know what you are talking about here in the Detroit area. Every white person is fearful of Detroit cuz its mostly populated by black people. It has to do with the race riots of the 60s - at least that is what my parents say.Detroit is a VERY racially divided city.

Sure, things like this happen sometimes if you're open to them. I've also been on the other end, come out of nowhere to help someone, and gotten accused of being an angel. When they say that I reply, no, I have to go to the bathroom sometimes.

Yes, I have. I am a white woman. It was a Black man, and a car situation. The man's boss saw him helping me, and screamed at him (felt he shouldn't have taken time for me, in the rain and mud). I often remember him, and pray for him, and feel totally inspired by his compassion. I am glad that there is a God, who can give him appropriate reward.

You wont feel the same way when he charged $2000 worth of room service to the room you gave him, and spends all the money you gave him on drugs and booze.
An intelligent woman such as yourself should know better then to trust any stranger for help like that. Especially in downtown detroit.
