If you're going by burial mound building, which could be indicative of religion, one might say as far back as 20000-15000 B.C. (or B.C.E., if you prefer); going by recorded literature, however, probably about 8000 B.C. Polytheism (worship of multiple deities) seemed to be the first religious experience, so it would definitely be a very long time ago(historically).

About 250,000 years ago when early man started to attribute "powers" to animals or objects around them. One of the first deities was the Cave Bear another the Storm.

Religion seems to be about as old as Homo sapiens. There's even some evidence that Neandertals may have had religious ideas. They intentionally buried their dead, which is usually considered to indicate a belief in an afterlife.
