Why do people refuse to think their questions through? I'm not even being mean; the question itself is kinda fuzzy. Are you talking of African Americans picking up other languages here? Um, how about, lack of availability (yeah, my 7th grade classes totally are teaching Latin, Spanish and Lamba?? What?)? How are many black people generations removed from the populations forced out of their homeland and physically forced to pretend to forget what they were and stood for supposed to know their true cultural background anyway? (Remember children, "Africa" is not a country or culture). For starters.
Blacks in Africa or other areas picking up other languages instead of their native ones? Practicality mainly, though I'm sure many are bi/multilingual. Places under European control had a tendency not to tolerate varying languages, so you're almost obligated to pick up something that can better interact with the government, etc. For starters.

Because most of them were imported to French or other colonies and have adapted to the local culture there. Keep in mind most blacks dont know their country/tribe of origin if their families have lived in a certain place for more than a few generations. Normally a person will speak the language of the place they live in. That was really an ignornant question to ask.

Umm because in early years the Europeans imperialised Africa and forced the African people to speak their languages and learn their ways. The languages stuck as well as Swahilli. So now in Africa both whites and blacks can speak Swahilli and French.

I wasn't aware that there were white and black languages.
I thought languages and the people that speak them were indicative of their country of origin.
I am sure that there are white people residing in Swahili and they speak the native language.
It is ignorant of you to think that every one in the world with dark skin is from the country of Africa.

A lot of Africans speak French or English because so many countries in Africa were French and/or British colonies.

Because, unfortunately, they don't teach African languages in a lot of public schools. In college, there are plenty of blacks who learn their tongue. But why don't whites who's great-great-greatgrand parents from Germany learn German? It's the same question..

It all depends on where you're talking about but in the case of america, most languages that are taught are white languages.

I studied French in high school.. and Swahili in college (one semester)....they didn't offer Swahili in the California school systems....and still don't.

Maybe they were born in France, grew up there, and btw the "lingua franca" is French.
