Check on the CIP page. It is the page at the beginning with the copyright, publishing and library info. Toward the bottom there should be some numbered subject headings, like 1. Korean War -- Fiction. If the word "fiction" appears anywhere there, the book is fiction. Also, under that, are some numbers, usually two sets. One will start with a letter or two, and the other is a three digit number, maybe followed by a decimal and more numbers. The one that starts with letters is the Library of Congress Call Number. This tells libraries where to shelve the book. Fiction books always start with "P". The 3 or 3 plus a decimal number is the Dewey Decimal number. Fiction books don't have one, they are shelved by author. If there is a number like 940 or 940.123, then it is non-fiction. 940 is the call number for European History/WWII.

Hope this helps.

Two great books on the Civil War, almost classics, are The Killer Angels and Gods and Generals, both by Michael or Jeff Shaara (The son continued his father's work). Each book gives about equal time to each side of the conflict, but the books are more about the actual Civil War than stuff like Gone With the Wind. You will get detailed and compelling descriptions from the points of view of some of the major and rising officers on both sides. Overall, these two books are extremely well done and really provoke a lot of thought. **A word of caution, however: if you start with Gods and Generals, which is the beginning of the war but not the first one written, the first part of the book is somewhat slow--just a heads up.

Historical Fiction. I looked for at on borders.com and saw that the title was The War Within: A Novel of the Civil War. Because it is a novel it cannot be non-fiction and since it is about an event in history it is historical fiction.

Hope this helps!
