It probably has about 50% to do with it, meaning half the employers probably rule her out because of it. The other half may just have someone better suited for the job.

Being over weight is a hard one, I've had managers at past jobs that discriminated against it heavily, then other ones who didn't notice.

Best way to combat it is to make sure that her clothes are newer and not skin tight, her makeup (if she wears it) should be impeccable, along with her nails and hair. By creating a polished look she can sway the managers away from her body image. Keep her energy up and positive, and to not walk slow when invited in (many people do this, not just larger people - but it is noticed).

Unfortunately this type of discrimination is very common, and very hard to prove.

Yes. It's definitely documented.

A program I once saw was very illuminating...Had an actress go about on the street - hailing a cab, asking for help with packages she was carrying from passers-by, and applying for a job. First - wearing a fat-suit and facial appliances to make her look overweight (professionally done), and then as her normal-weight self. Doing the exact same things. The difference in how people treated her was remarkable. Stunning, even. Size-discrimination is NOT imaginary.

One more possible issue with an employer. Since many pay a good deal of money for their employees' health insurance, they may percieve an overweight person as more of a health risk factor, which may drive up the total premiums when the insurance renews. Doesn't make it right, but it may be a factor.

YES. I was skinny 3 years ago and rapidly gained 60 lbs! I don't get the good jobs now, nor the good treatment from the men I use to take for granted. The good news is that my real friends treat me the same!

There is definately weight discrimination. It has been well documented and there are even groups that help fight against weight discrimination.
