When I told my friend that I wanted to be a professional baker she just gave me this wierd look and said "that's what you want to do with the rest of your life?" it stuck with me since. I'm 16, i'll be 17 in March...but do you think I should choose another career...something...'better'?

I think you should do what you love regardless of what anyone else has to say. Is she going to be the one paying your bills? Is she going to be the one who's with you while you're at a job that might look great to everyone else but that you hate and don't find fulfilling? Well I didn't think so, follow your heart if you want to bake and that's what you love then go after that.

Do some research and go talk to some peeple who work in a place that you'd like to work and then enroll in culinary school. Contrary to what your friend thinks, cooking can be very tough and competitive especially if you work in a top resturant. And the career you want has so many different spectrums, you could become a pastry chef for a resturant or you could own your own bake shop or you could cater. I think it could be fulfilling because you're going to make a lot of people happy by feeding them sweets.

So all i can say is research this field while you're still in highschool before you make your decision, and then ultimately look into your heart and find out what it is that you really enjoy and follow your dreams. Good luck.

Do not let anyone plan your career for you.If you enjoy doing that that is what you should do.The food industry is one of the fastest growing career in the U.S.It is not a very easy job.If you like dealing with people and is able to be a team player.Tnat is the job to do.You also need to be creative. It is better you do something that you love and have a passion for cause that will make you happy. The good thing about that career is that you can start at the bottom and work your way to the top

If you want to work in a bakery, or run/own a bakery, it could be a tough life. I have a friend who has a cake decorating business and she is making a killing. However, study how to run a business as much as you do baking or decorating. If you know business, you can go into any business and learn the trade. If you know how to bake, you are a baker. Period. That is probably what your friend was trying to tell you. Think about where you want to take your trade.
