The function of a firewall it to protect you and your computer from unsolicited access. The way a computer communicates with others, including the internet is thru a software device called a port. This is all going on in the background and doesn't require interaction with the user except in very specific cases.
The firewall watches and stops unauthorized attempts to access the computer thru these ports. In some cases, you will be prompted whether or not you want to allow access and in those cases it will tell you who it is that is trying to use the port for access to your computer. Firewalls like Norton or McAfee have reports that you can view on who is trying and how they handled it. You probably will be amazed at how many attempts there are. When it comes to saying OK or yes, if you don't recognize the name , just say no! Hope that helped.

Usually you can set those to , like medium, low or whatever. That determines how strict the firewall is going to be. Also, if the firewall is asking you if you want to say no or yes, then that means the firewall is trying to warn you not to say OK. Whenever my security system asks me if I want to allow a certain site, I say no.

What firewall are you using? (some are more user friendly then others) and when you say yes to what in particular? You need to be more specific!

your firewall keeps other people from accessing files on your computer when you are online but not running the machine.
