I've heard that St. Thomas is dirty and unsafe. Is this true? Can anyone give me any suggestions about where to stay, things to do, where we can rent scooters? Any info would help.

It is safe in the daytime but not a place to venture out alone at night. The island is remarkably clean compared to other islands. Scooters can be rented in Charlotte Amalie. Driving is on the left side. Look into renting a private villa. You have your own house and private pool. Hit the beaches, take a ferry ride to St. John and snorkel there, shop in Charlotte Amalie.

As Laura said I would look at St. john over St. Thomas. St. Thomas is a cruise ship stop so their economy pretty much revolves around that which means that if there are no ships that day then everything is pretty much closed and if there are ships that day then it is packed. And choosing between ST. John and Maui I would pick the one that is closer because they are pretty similar overall. If you go to ST. John then try to stay at Caneel Bay. It is awesome.

There are a couple of scooter rental stores. They are not going to have websites that you can look at. Once you get to St Thomas anyone will be able to give your thier names and phone #'s.
