Excellent question. But no simple or single answer. The question is so broad and vague that it would be difficult to narrow down to a single person. However, it is most likely that all around, the most important person, or people, would have to be connected to religion for they have helped to shape individual and scientific thought and direction in their respective worlds. The morals and values of their societies helped to guide individuals forward in the pursuit of truth - whatever each believes the truth to be.

For example, Muhammad was the founder of a religion that would spread world wide and have profound impact on so many cultures and people around the world - by those who accepted Islam and by those who rejected and fought it.

Or maybe Constantine, in the shaping of Christian thought at the Council of Nicaea by setting the doctrine of Christians for millenia.

Perhaps David for finally unifying the Hebrews in Palestine and creating a monotheistic state in a polytheistic world which would contribute to the development of later monotheistic though.

But in truth, it would be difficult to argue against any nominee for most important person in the history of mankind for every person has a profound affect on the people he/she touches.

And as for Pauly Shure, I am not even sure any of these other figures could hold a candle to him.

Besides Pauly Shore, I'd have to say that there was no most important person. Notwithstanding the fact that the modern world is essentially the result of the efforts of mankind in its entirety, there's no denying that monumental socio-political shifts often occur as a result of the efforts of a few individuals. Yet I don't know that it's possible to crown someone as most important. Most important in what way? Most important to mathematics? Well, Newton did invent calculus. Most important to communication? Gutenberg invented movable type (about 400 or 500 years after the Chinese), Bell invented the telephone (securing the patent by only two hours), and Al Gore invented the Internet (OK, I KNOW what he meant, but still, I thought it was funny!). Most important to Western thought? Muslim monks transcribed the scrolls that survived the destruction of the library at Alexandria, preserving the ancient Greco-Roman philosophers and playwrights that essentially birthed the Western humanities. So many individuals contributed, so I'd argue that there was no single most important person.
