You've asked a very interesting question. When I see something horrifying, I tend to cover my eyes so that I don't have to see it.
Many people do cover their mouth though. The only thing that I can think of is it leaves them speechless and they cover their mouth instead of screaming.
I'll keep monitoring your question to see if anyone has any better ideas.

I believe it has to do with keeping evil spirits out of the body. People used to believe that evil spirits entered through the mouth, so when viewing something horrifying or evil, they'd cover their mouths to prevent this. Today, that belief has gone by the wayside, but the gesture remains.

If I would have to make a guess, I would say probaly because its a natural human reaction that we all have. If I had witnessed something terrible, then I would feel the need to scream even though I couldnt make a peep. Just like when a person is just about to sneeze, they tend to put their hand up by their nose. Just thought I would voice my opinion. Thanks!!!!!!:)

Thats a good question. I think it is because its just a natural reaction in my opinion people do different things like dropping their mouth open or putting their hands on their face. Hope this answers your question.

good question. its shock and your brain thinks your in danger so it gets a lot of stuff to cover your brain and in a split second realizes that o im not in danger. thats one reason, or they dont wanna make lots of noise when they scream/gasp/noise so they block the sound waves. hope this helps!

To cover their gaping yaw! It's being polite even during moments of traumatic horror!

I have no idea, and apparently you don't either or you wouldn't have asked. I just think it's an uncontrollable reaction. Such as a sneeze or a cough.

They don't want to breathe in any demonic spirits that are surely behind the event.
