this is not a scientific calculation, but since the US population is 298,201,327, even if we assume that 20% of the population is under 20, that leaves 59,640,265. Then, let's assume that 1 percent of those people are even capable of playing ball, you have 596,403 candidates. Then assume 1 percent of that population plays ball well: 5,964. Then, assuming 30 NBA teams with a roster of 15 players per team: 450 players.
450 roster spots for 60 million Americans... you can see that the chances are slim.
But, if you start in the 6th grade (or earlier), you have a better chance than someone who waits until they're in their teens.

Mathematically- the us census bureau stated that there were 141,274,964 males in the USA in 2005.
30 NBA teams have rosters of 15 players (12 active, 3 reserve)
450 total players
Divide the total number of males in the US by 450 and the odds are: 1 in 313,994.
**Side note-the NBA is very international now...Dirk, Nash, Z, Yao, Pau, etc.
The odds are probably much worse than what I gave you.

you're in luck. Yesterday, I read in a magazine that it was like 1 in 9000 of sports participants I think. So thats around a .01% chance. Don't bet on making the NBA unless you're extremely dominant.

Almost none
1st and foremost you have to be incredibly gifted. Take an NBA scrub, they were all-american high schoolers and some all-american college players.
2nd you have to work your butt off to get there.
