During the 1920's the "Flapper" movement of wild parties, free drinking, free spending, and less traditional values took off. The stock market took off and many bought on margin (without money to back up their stock purchases). Many stocks also had value only on paper, no real corporation to back them up.
At the same time, many less wealthy rural Americans took up a "New Awakening" of Christian tent revival shows. Massive meetings of "fundementalist" Christians listened to uneducated lay preachers. Faith healing, speaking in toungues, baptisms, and other practices flourished as people looked for simpler answers to a world becoming more complex.
