The purpose of the pilot is to let the reader relate to the lessons of the Little Prince, as he struggles to understand the subtle truths that are presented to him during the story. The reader is more able to relate to the pilot as a normal human, than to the Prince, who is a spiritual being.

The fox teaches the Prince why his rose is so important to him, even though she doesn't compare to a whole garden of roses. He also shows the meaning of true friendship by sacrifice, encouraging the Prince to return home even after he has been tamed.

The rose is the reason the Little Prince leaves his planet in the first place, and the reason he returns. Her relationship with the Prince shows the truth in what the fox says about how love comes from investing in other people.

I was wondering if you'd ask about the snake!
The snake is so confident in his knowledge that he speaks only in riddles, because he says he knows all the answers. In a story about mysteries, the snake is the only absolute. He represents the unavoidability of death - with his bite, he sends the Prince home.

Personally, I like it because it was simple enough to be understood on a child's level, but impactful enough to be appreciated by an adult. The author relays complex thoughts and emotions in simple yet effective ways, such as when the Fox is talking to the Little Prince about being tamed. It was whimsical but sad, and I really appreciated that. It is a truly awesome book. =)
