Why is Abraham Lincoln considered distinguished as an orator?

Two things you need to know about Lincoln's speeches: 1) he knew his audience and spoke directly to them in language, jargon idiom and phrases they understood. 2) He relied heavily on the Bible to phrase his speeches.

I'm glad someone asked about Lincoln and the Gettysburg address, since it was his birthday yesterday. Here's a hint for you, don't just read it, read it out loud as if you're giving a speech to hundreds of people, and the phrasing and language are much easier to understand

I think the biggest effect was the length. He had only a limited time to talk and was really not the main attraction of that day's speakers. The speech gave people in the North a reason for why they were fighting. It's hard to understand how many people died on the battlefield during that battle. There were so many people that they had to hire a company to come in and bury them. A lot of them were buried without ever even being identified. I guess when that many lives are lost you would want an explanation, and that's what Abraham Lincoln delivered.

because it's nice and short. One's mind wanders in a long speech, somthing modern speech maker do not seem to be aware of.
