i think everyone should be allowed to get married to anyone, as long as they are two consenting adults.. sexuality, sexual orientation really shouldn't matter.. it's all about love, and when two people are allowed to share their love in marriage, they will both become more happy and positive people and will likely make a greater contribution to the world around them. that's my thoughts..

The government has no right denying two people their freedom to get married. If they want a church ceremony, it's a metter betweeen the couple and the church. If they want a civil ceremony, the gov has no right to stand in their way. And, as far as the tax breaks, etc, it's unconstitutional to apply one set of rules to some married couples and another set to others.

We live in a country that is supposed to guarantee separation of church and state. Therefore, the law has no business saying who can and can't get married based on religious grounds. And there are no other grounds.

During the early 1950's, psychologist Evelyn Hooker carried out a landmark experiment where she tested both heterosexuals and homosexuals with tests designed to be diagnostic for mental disorder. She then presented the test results to other psychologists and asked them to pick out the homosexuals. They could not. These results were peer review puiblished in 1957 and as a result, homosexuality was removed from the next version of the Diagnostic and Statistical manual.

"As of 2006, all of the professional organizations in the field state that homosexuality is a normal, natural, and fixed sexual orientation, with the exception of a small group, The National Association for Research and Therapy of Homosexuality whose beliefs appear to be based on conservative Christian theology." Currently, the American Psychological Association considers any attempt by a therapist to change a client's sexual orientation to be unethical..

Years ago, some people said it was wrong for blacks and whites to marry and it was illegal in some states. Yet it really was just an excuse to enforce discrimination and enable bigotry.

It's not enough to simply say it's wrong. You have to be able to say why it's wrong, without using the bible. I challenge anyone here to find some valid reason for denying a group of people a basic human right. We're not supposed to have second class citizens in this country.

Please don't say anything about the sanctity of marriage. Heterosexuals like Britney Spears do far more to tarnish that concept than any gay or lesbian couple that I know could possibly do.

I personally do not understand the debate of gay marriage for two reasons.

1. Why does the government have any say in who can get married and who can not? The definition of marriage is taken from the religious meaning of a sacrament between a man and a women. Well that's just fine and dandy, however the problem here is that is a religious sacrament. Don't see a problem? Separation of Church and State. Since when does the government have say over who can be married within a church (or temple for that matter etc...)? Or what church marriages they wish to acknowledge and which they deny. The fact of the matter is this debate is based off homophobia. A civil union is the joining of two people of the same sex with rights of that of spouses in a marriage. Why should gay couples be denied a civil union? If the couple is not christian or of another religion that says homosexuality is wrong, why should they be subject to that religions beliefs? It is undemocratic and wrong, purely based off homophobic views that plague our government.

2. Why do straight people care so much about how other people want to live their lives. If you are Christian, that's great I can understand the fact that you want to protect your beliefs and your church finds homosexuality wrong. Fine don't join gay people in marriage ceremonies, there are plenty of alternatives they can find. But why try to take their rights away at a legal level? What makes these people believe they are better than a homosexual couple? They do not believe in the same things and are happy living their lives the way they see fit, what right do you have to take that away from them? None what so ever, and actually, the pursuit of happiness is protected in the constitution.

So my problem with the gay marriage issue, is basically the fact that it is an issue. There is no legal basis for the banning of it, the government has absolutely no right, and unfortunately people who have dedicated their entire lives to the study of law can not see this, but classes of college and high school students can see the problem, even people of the catholic persuasion (a religion who is opposed to gay marriage) can see the problem!

The fact of the matter is, no two people should be denied the right to a civil union or even a marriage by the government. This entire concept needs to be looked at again by our country and re-thought. The current way many people look at this issue is closed mined, biased and basically un-american.

A very important thing to note, is denying gay marriage is the equivalent of denying inter-racial marriage, both are genetic, you are born gay, you are born with your race, there is no way to change this. You can not start denying rights based off of sexual orientation, that is called "Discrimination."

I don't see any problem with gay marriage. If the 2 people love each other I say why not. I just don't get why it's not legal...It's not like it's hurting anybody! A man and a woman can get married but somehow it's automatically wrong for two women/men to do it...It doesn't make any sense at all. I believe that gays should not be treated as second class citizens. they should have the same rights and freedoms as anyone else.

In order to answer this question one must first define marriage. Marriage, simply put, is a society's way of defining the best possible standard of behavior. It is an ideal that is blessed and supported by society in general. People certainly do not have to get married. If people wish to live together they certainly may. If they wish to love or live with people of the same gender or even multiple people they can do that, too. But same gender couples or multiple wives or husbands is not the ideal. Over many thousands of years, societies have pretty much discovered that the standard that works best is one man with one woman and all offspring being from a union of the two to be the best standard of behavior and it is therefore held in the highest esteem. Nothing anyone says or does will change that fact. There can only be one ideal standard. There are many other combinations that may work, too, but they are not the ideal. Marriage is, simply put, a definition of the "ideal" way people should live to have the best shot at a successful society.

I'm Canadian & as you probably know, gay marriage is legal in Canada. Years ago, in the '70s I lived in Toronto, and 2 of my gay friends had been living together for over 15 years. One of them became terminally ill & incapicitated by a stroke. His family did not approve of the relationship and forbad the other from going to the Hospital or the funeral. If they had been married, that would never have happened. But more important is the dignity factor. If 2 people want to commit themselves to each other, than their union should be dignified with a ceremony, if they wish. Also they should enjoy tax savings and other benefits such as insurance benefits and pensions etc. Maybe Gays can get it figured out, with the rapidly rising divorce rate among Non-gays, maybe Gays can set a good example.

I don't understand why it is not legal...If there is a separation of church and state, then why not allow it? The only objection is it is "immoral". The pledge is no longer said in school b/c "One nation under God". These lawmakers haven't really got a leg to stand on and it is only thnaks to the support of close-minded bible thumpers that still support this issue of not allowing it. Gay people live together, love each other, who is it hurting? My goodness why can't people mind their business? can't they care about something that actually affects them!

Gay marriage is absolutely fine. Why should homosexuals be discriminated against? Religious people say Hell no!, but I say Hell Yeah! I'm straight and there's nothing wrong with gays. Marriage should be allowed for everybody.

I see no valid reason why gay people shouldn't be allowed to marry whomever they choose, so long as both partners are freely consenting adults, just like with straight people.

People who say we need to "defend marriage" need to stop freaking out. My marriage doesn't need defending, and if it did, it certainly wouldn't be in danger because Bill and Bob down the road were getting married.
