...without giving any answer, much less a better answer themselves? If they believe that a certain answer is bad, then wouldn't it be reasonable to submit what they think is the right answer? I've seen this happen too many times. What do you think about this?

I give thumbs downs under the following circumstances:

the answer is insulting (to the asker, or an answerer, or to some religious/ethnic/philosophic group, etc.) It is perfectly possible to disagree without being an a**hole about it.

the answer is factually, wrong. Not wrong as an opinion, but just wrong. If you say, "I feel that 2 + 2 = Japan!," I will give you a thumbs down, I don't care how strongly you feel about it.

If I feel that you gave my answer a thumbs down. If my answer is the last in line, for a while, and there are no thumbs down on it, and then some one else posts an answer immediately after mine, and there is now a thumbs down on my answer, the logical inference is that that person read my answer, didn't like it, and gave me a thumbs down. Well, back at ya, baby! (If there are more than one answers after mine, I have no way of guessing who gave me the thumbs down, so I just have to roll with it.)

Some people give thumbs down because the answer is bad, or wrong. And if the correct, or at least a better, answer has already been written, why waste their time repeating the same thing?

I think some people are just mean. I honestly think someone goes around thumbs-downing people without even reading what they wrote.

It's no big thing to me. I think you are making a mountain out of a mole hill.

Yes, it is very baffling why some people behave that way. It is such a waste of time and effort. It just doesn't figure.

It's their choice what they want to do. I personally don't mind. What I don't like is being reported just because the person doesn't comprehend my meaning.

Nice coin, by the way.
