I want to buy something on Ebay that is pretty expensive. I am not a very experienced Ebayer. The Seller does not accept PayPal but accepts credit cards Visa, Mastercard, Discovery, Amex. The Seller says that they accept the credit cards thru a secure payment gateway. The Seller says they will send a link to my email after the auction to complete the purchase. What exactly is a secure payment gateway? Am I actually giving the Seller my credit card information? Also, if my item doesn't come or something is wrong with it, is there some form of Buyer protection as there would be through PayPal? I basically want to know how safe this form of payment is.

the ONLY safe way to pay on ebay is through PAYPAL with a CREDIT CARD.

why take the risk of using their check out?

i know i would never give my CC # to anyone that i didn't know.

couldn't you find the item elsewhere?

what is the item if i may ask?

i would NEVER buy anything expensive on ebay.

I would not make this purchase this way. Paypal offers buyer protection along with ebay, but if you give out your credit card information and this is a scam site, then you run the risk of identity theft. If you are serious about buying this item, I would consider a Cashier Check or a Money Order. I secure link should be encrypted to prevent anyone from stealing your credit card information. Consider reading the buyer information in the ebay help section to help you learn about payment options and protection.

It is hard to say how secure it really is. Anyone can generate a link. The "secure gateway" could be the buyer himself as he watchs your info come rolling in over that link that he tricked you into trusting. Or....it could be compltetely secure. The secure gateway he is referring to could be his bank or maybe even ebay as the middle man. Odds are there is nothing to be worried about, but if you have a shadow of a doubt I would say move on to the next auction. That will be the best buyer protection you are going to find. And frankly, it does smell a little fishy....I mean an ebay seller that doesn't accept PayPal, that's almost unheard of.
