I am currently in the market for a new guitar, and I really want to buy an explorer. I just wated to know if it is worth the extra $500 to buy the Gibson version, or should I settle for the Epiphone?

I have also tried some new Epis and if they were the only manufacturer in the world, I'd stop playing guitar. Bad sound, bad feel, bad everything, even though they are owned by Gibson. That might be somewhat corrected by buying decent pickups, like DiMarzio, instead of the Epi trash. So, if you are looking to buy, then find a decent used Gibson, that might be your best shot at a good velue vs. price ratio.
If you are into useless but ugly shapes like Explorer, then check out Ibanez Iceman - infinitely more versatile than anything Gibson ever did, and at half the price. And Ibanez is not a beginners' choice like Epi, serious mainstream players use those guitars.
