my tooth is hurting really bad, so bad that i couldnt even eat my food, open my mouth all the way, nor swallow food or water without pain in my gums and throat. i am 19 weeks and scheduled for a dental xray tomorrow to see how bad my tooth is. i already talked to my nurse and she said it was ok, but could it cause bad birth diffects or miscarriage?

Normally it should be safe.

But check with your Gynae & Dentist both.

I know it hurts and you are probably in ALOT of pain but I would wait until after the baby. For starters it is not safe to have a X-Ray done while pregnant because even the smallest amount of radiation can harm the baby. Then the pain medicine that they give you to num your while month is not safe for the baby either.

I just had a baby (6wks old) and all 4 of my wisdom teeth were impacted (very painful) and my DR told me that if I had them removed I was going to be putting my baby at serious risk (birth defects, miscarriage, etc.) My advice would be to take some tylenol and use some ambesol and just suck it up until after the baby is born. After all the babies health and well being should be your top priority right now.

Hope I did not offend you .... just wanted to give me advice and tell you what my DR told me.

My wisdom tooth grew in a few weeks ago and only hurt for a few days before the pain suddenly vanished. After consulting my ob/gyn, he informed me that most dentists are overly concerned about pulling teeth during pregnancy, and that it is in fact safe. However, the dentists are required to contact your doctor so they can discuss what type of medications and anasthesia is safe for you. Please make sure your dentist contacts your doctor first before doing anything. When I went to my last appointment, I was refused an X-ray until they received a faxed consent from my doctor. Good luck with everything!

I found some research on the web about x-ray radiation, it said one x-ray is as strong as 1/20th of the radiation we get in a year from our environment.

My dentist told me that he was more concerned with the risk of using anesthesia than with the x-ray.

If it is infected the infection could hurt you and the baby. Your stress from the pain can also hurt the baby. So you have to decide which threat is worse.

An old remedy for relieving a tooth ache is to hang your head over the side of the bed, or lay on some cushions on the floor so your head is below your heart. Let your mouth relax, and let the saliva drain onto a towel. It will hurt even worse for a few minutes, lay there for 10 to 20 minutes, and when you get up the pain should subside for a few hours. I hadn't slept for two days before my mom let me know this trick. This doesn't cure infection, but it could get you to your next dental appointment.

Swishing with salt water helps.

Doctors and dentists don't like to be accused of malpractice, so they will always say there is a risk. Educating yourself will give you a variety of answers. I have found many testimonials of women who say they had dental surgery during their pregnancy and their child is fine.

Eating foods that help clean the blood help also, high fiber foods, and cruciferous vegetables such as cabbage, broccoli and radish.

Taking multi-vitamins will boost your immune system.

Drinking licorice tea with a little clove helps, and lots of fluids in general.

My doctor said it'd be okay to have an x-ray while pregnant. They put a lead shield across your belly to be extra safe. He told me that you'd have to have about 100 x-rays without the protective shield to cause harm. I was working in a vet's office at the time, so I would've been at higher risk than you are, but it's safe, don't worry.

if U can hold off but if it is a must do thing then find out as much info as you can from the doctor as well as the dentist because having a tooth remove it can even lead to death from bacteria and such and there are medications involve also.so make sure you let the doctor know everything about the situation before you make a decision on what you want to do not the nurse
best wishes to ya

You are at 19 weeks, can't eat or swallow, but are willing to ignore what a trained health professional told you? But, only to question common sense procedure that prevents you from dying of hunger or thirst before childbirth? Where are anti-abortion people when you want one to hold the hand of a lady like this? This woman desperately needs some comforting and better
counseling.

Personally, i wouldnt risk it. But, i know how much it hurts. I would take some time and research this as much as possible. ask local doctors, your doctors and maybe you should change you question to " Has anyone had their tooth pulled while pregnant?"
