A nice project to do if you do it right the first time and don't cut corners.

I built my own garage. After seeing what kind of nightmares garages can turn into after completion and filling with all the stuff we cram into them this is what i did before i started.

I picked the location then parked both my pickup and my car next to each other with the doors wide open on both sides of each vehicle. I left a space of 2 ft between the opened doors in the center between the vehicles. Then i measured 6' from the opened passenger side door of the car and the opened door of the drivers side door of the pickup. Then 6' in front and back of both vehicles and this helped me to determine the demensions of the garage i wanted.

This gave me room to add work benches, and table saw, drill press, lathe, lawnmower, garden tiller etc. and still have room to work on things.

I added skylights so i wouldn't have to have the lights on during the day. I also built a loft into half the overhead area for storage.
I built cabinets with doors on them, drawers on the work benches etc. I have a place to store every tool i own and a space for the rollaway tool cabinet.

My garage which is wood framed, insulated, heated, with vinyl siding and 2 Garage doors and walkthrough door Cost me $19,000 to build myself. I bought the materials at Lowe's and Home Depot. I made my own trusses for the roof one can do this at half the cost of buying prebuilt trusses.

It's been really nice to work inside my garage especially this winter when it was 20 below zero outside i was quite comfortable inside my garage where the temp was 60 degrees.

I would suggest spending about $20,000 tops if you build yourself that way you will have a garage that will suit your needs for life. Don't forget to build in a loft as that extra space is great for storing christmas decorations, and other stuff that you accumulate over the years.
