"Lie" is gramatically incorrect, it is the present tense of the word. The sentence is written in past tense and therefore the word should be used in it's past tense, laid. However, although "Lay" is present tense, it would also work in the context of this sentence.

Boo, 'had lain' ain't proper English. THis has to be past perfect. Lain is a good word though
