The Soviets were planning on building nuclear missile silos in Cuba. Being that Cuba was a bit too close, Kennedy ordered a blockage of Cuba and disallowed any Soviet ships to land there. If they crossed the blockade they would have been fired upon and this act of war could have set off World War III (all nukes). But the Soviet Premiere Kruschev was a big wimp and backed off. This pretty much insured the fact that we would end up winning the Cold War, alas, 36 years later.
