With his war grinding on, it may be decades before Republicans win another election. One can only hope.

John in AZ: I NEVER supported this war. I have had no flips or flops. We never jumped on or off that bandwagon. As a Vietam era Navy vet I am taken by so many familiar points in common between these two wars where America has betrayed herself. What has this whole thing been for?

Hiesemiest : I don't see it that way. As far as I can tell this IS Mr. Bush's war. I wish him the joy of it.

This is the one thing he truly, has been, the greatest. Harming the image of the republican party as a whole. Along with his top people they have managed to do more to drag down America at home and in the eyes of the world than any other three Presidents you can think put together. It's only the die hard vote republican at any cost people that don't see the damage done. That is not important, most of America thought otherwise in November. Throw in the convictions and jail sentences of party members, Mark Foley the black eye that wouldn't go away and now the Libby trial and all that implies. This President, this administration, way worse than Nixon. This was a complete abandonment of the conservative republican party, a true slap in the face by capitalism.

I think Bush has done far greater harm to the conservative movement than he has to the GOP. Leaving aside FDR’s brilliant leadership of the Democratic Party from 1932-1945, political parties get new leaders every decade or so and the public wants a change from one to the other. Pendulums shift.
The conservative movement is a whole different story. Bush has done great harm to it in my opinion. What does it mean to be a conservative anymore? I myself am neither conservative nor liberal but at least I have some notion of what it means to be a liberal. Is a conservative like the Weekly Standard pro-Iraq war types or the Pat Buchanan anti-Iraq war types? Is a conservative like the Christianist anti-gay types or the libertarian pro-gay Barry Goldwater types? Is a conservative pro-illegal immigration like the big business Chamber of Commerce people or anti-illegal immigration like Tom Tancrado? Is a conservative for less government like Ronald Regan or more government like George W. Bush, whose administration has seen government grow faster than any other since FDR?

If the democrats can play their cards rite, They will probably be out of any majorities for a couple decades. But if the democrats start an unpopular war are in another way screw up they could be back in 2008. I hate resting the hope of an entire nation, indeed many nations, in the hands of the democrats.

Actually Bush has not really harmed the GOP as Conservatives vote for the man not the party. Liberals on the other hand just pull the party lever. Since Bush can't run again, he hasn't really hurt anybody. Jimmy Carter barely managed to defeat Gerald Ford even after the disgraceful behavior of Richard Nixon. Ronald Reagan beat Carter in a Landslide, and then 4 years later inhilated Walter Mondale.

You say it as if there is some solution that the Dem's are gonna have if they get elected. A big problem exists with that, and that is, that you all want to publicly proclaim your opposition to the war, but not one of you has an effective solution. You point fingers, throw out inaccurate statements, flip-flop on your support for the war and deceive everyone in your media reports. The entire time, letting our troops now you oppose what they are doing. Then say you support them. Wow! I think I might flip-flop to your side......NOT!!!!!

None, the Republicans have done it to themselves. Bush has followed the plan he laid out for congress for them to vote in invading Iraq, however all or most have turned into weasels.
It is not President Bush's fault Oh yes, it is not his war. It is your war. If you are Jew, Christian or Islam. If you love your freedom. I suggest studying this holy war of Islam. Go back in history when Islam invaded east from Baghdad to India. Study of the destruction which laid in their path.
Harm, It is very possible you my young friend will see this destruction in your home town very soon.

THIS is what is wrong with people today. Being so concerned about a political party...rather than the citizens! Have you so soon forgot about Hitler's one party system?? Geez Louise....
