You computer is turning itself on? Are you sure your kids or spouse are not doing it? If your system can not shutdown properly, it may initiate a restart on its own. A damaged exit sound file; incorrectly configured, damaged, or incompatible hardware; conflicting programs, or an incompatible, damaged, or conflicting device driver can all force a reboot after shutdown. Also make sure you don't have any viruses or spyware. Another possibility is that your BIOS has a wake mode. Take appropriate action.

Do you have a DSL modem/Router on your computer? If so, do you completely power it down when you turn off the Computer. If not, "hackers" can turn on your computer through the Modem/Router remaining turned on.

If you do leave it turned on, scan your computer with AntiVirus and AntiSpyware programs.

When you turn off the computer at the power button on the tower, it is, Technically, still turned on. Power is still going to many functions to keep them "warm" for quick startup. If you power down your Modem/Router the computer can still turn itself on due to this "keep warm" state.

There are a couple of thing you should check that could be causing this. Heat and outdated Video drivers are the most common reasons.

First. Check the inside of the computer for dust. If it is dirty, clean it. Completely unplug the computer and then vacuum it. Do not use the Brush Attachment since it can cause static and damage parts. Do not used canned air to blow out the dust. This can drive dust into area you do not want it, and cause additional problems.

Second. Make sure you have the latest Video Card drivers. Out of date Video Drivers are the most common reason for computers to reboot on their own. Your computers manufacturer should have any udated drivers available for download. These are usually found in their "Support" area. If they don't have it, go to the Video Card makers site and check there for Driver updates.

If your computer is not Infected with Malware, and Video drivers are not available, try this workaround. Hopefully it will stop this problem.

1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.

2. On the left side click on the "Display Classic View", Click the Display Icon, click the Settings tab, and then click Advanced.

3. Click the Performance or Troubleshooting tab (depending on your operating system), and then reduce hardware acceleration a notch at a time until your system stabilizes.

Many network cards allow a computer to be booted up remotely, but this requires somebody sending you a magic-wake packet. It's far more likely you didn't completely turn your computer off.
