Well, this question has some interesting answers because, first, if you're talking about the super, shiny, squeaky-clean, purified water that we, as humans, think is healthy that comes out of our taps and filters and decorations and plants and gravel that have been cleaned within an inch of their lives, then the answer would be no, fish do not do well in this kind of water. We shouldn't ever clean our tanks this squeaky clean. Now, on the other hand, filthy dirty water that has layers of gunk on the bottom and is so bad that the filtration system isn't working properly is just as bad. We need a nice in-between where there is a little bit of stuff in the tank to encourage the beneficial bacteria to grow that will cause the water to cycle properly and get the water in healthy parameters. But, all of the water issues aside, the real determining factor of what encourages a fish to grow is the size of the tank. You can have the perfect water and if you have too small of a tank, your fish will not appear to grow as big, but that is not because it has remained small, as in a dwarf or something like that, it is because the small quarter have stunted its growth and it is deformed from the inside out. So, the correct answer to this question would be two-fold. A fish grows bigger in water that has been properly cycled and is healthy according to fish standards AND having the proper sized tank. Thanks for asking this question! It was a really good question!

fresh water. breeders started noticing their babies growing faster if they aren't kept in the same water but given frequent fresh water.

the whole thing about fish growing to fit their environment is kind of false. in general water in a 10 gallon tank isn't that great but if you put the same fish in a 55 gallon tank then the water will be better and he will grow larger.

it depends on your definition of dirty, and clean
if you mean free of ammonia, yes, free of particulates?
that can be different for each species there are black water fish who do better in water that is dark, and barely have visable

marine species can live in an environment called marine snow which is a dense particularlate matter of fish larva and plankton

fish grow bigger and faster in water that is changed frequently, because fish growth is stunted by a pheromone that fish excrete, so when you get rid of this pheromone they get bigger faster.
cichlids are very suseptable to this

Because I only keep my fish in fresh water and properly sized tanks they grow large and healthy. Fish in dirty water and tanks to small for them will not reach full sized and will die earlier. It is not healthy in anyway.

I beg to differ with most answers I saw Goldfish live better in fresh water ,with a little bit of alge a little bit of dirt, goldfish live outside in the wild and are very very hard to kill you have to almost have to be trying to kill them . I also know that a goldfish will continue to grow beyond that of tank size . I had a 9 inch comet once in a 15 gallon tank

Fish grow to the size of their environment. In a small tank, they won't grow big, no matter how clean the water is.
However, dirty water can affect their health!
