I'm not a huge Beatles guy, but u gotta go John Lennon. He was the total package: amazing musician, peaceful, activist, and he actually stood for something. Just look at how his murder shocked the world, he had a much greater impact on humanity than Hendrix, Cobain, Presley.....

There are too many to mention because of the genre of music involved. The list could go on forever(well probably not forever) but anyone who was an innovator or changed the way people felt by playing or singing just one note is going to leave a lasting impression on a person. There have been a lot of great names mentioned already but I'd like to add Marvin Gaye to the list.
