'The Highwayman" by Alfred Noyes is great. Love, Sex, Death by self sacrifice, and great rhythm and rhyme.

These is another beautiful Scots ballad about riding though the rain to meet the beloved, but they are intercepted by the enemy and he is killed before her eyes. Can't remember enough words to search for it, but it is great. The Scots seem to be full of tragedy. Love you, Sammy

The Scots wrote a veritable ton of them. Many became North American Folk ballads. Look in the Library of Congress. Lomax Collection.

Let me refer you to one of the best: Robert Service. His work primarily revolves around the years he spent in Alaska and are hilarious. No "Evangeline" here, just amusing and interesting ballads. (Also - easy to memorize.)
