I enjoyed reading "See Here Private Hargrove" and "From Here To Eternity" because they were written during WWII about the lives of ordinary GIs at the beginning of the war. There's not much about the actual war, though. They deal mainly with life before Pearl Harbor and immediately after.
FHTE is kind of long but very readable.

If you haven't read "The Things They Carried" by Tim O'Brien run out right now and get a copy. It's the best novel about grunts in Vietnam, and one of the best books of the genre.

Johnny were given His Gun is between the most concept scary books i have ever study. no longer conflict a lot as anti-conflict. Atonement through Ian McEwan and Birdsong through Sebastian Faulks are not labeled as conflict novels yet very most of the tale is conflict action. Birdsong's conflict scenes are different maximum gripping and terrifying i have ever study. The Winds of conflict and conflict and Remembrance through Herman Wouk take you each and every and each and every of the conflict through international conflict II. very solid study. The Killer Angels through Michael Shaara the skinny pink Line through James Jones (and From the following to Eternity) The pink Badge of braveness through Stephen Crane and A Farewell to fingers through Ernest Hemingway.

The novel "The Bridge Over the River Kwai" is an excellent read (and short). It is far different than the movie and is much more fact-based. WWII.
