I used to be a temp. The best way I found was to let the company know that I was going on an interview after I started scheduling them. I would try to set it up during my lunch, which only works if you have an hour for lunch, or early in the morning so I wouldn't be too late to work.

I'm afraid that Dan H is right ... the employers will care more about the work getting done than about who does it. If it is a temporary job then they should know you will be looking for another job, either to take after this one is completed or a permanent job ... this is reality.
I would be open with them ... if you like the job and the people it maybe that they are keen for you to stay on after this assignment is completed. Are they honest people if so they will appreciate your honestly

Always set up interviews around your work schedule. Do not jeopardize your current job looking for another. See if you can work through lunch and leave early for an appointment. You don't need to tell your current employer, just because you are looking does not mean you will find a job, so don't burn your bridges.

I know you need the job, and it's risky--but your current employer couldn't care less about you. Otherwise, you wouldn't be a temporary employee. They're going to let you go when your time is up anyway, so get a jump start on something better and permanent.

I was in the same boat. Current bad job - better possible future job.
One thing to my credit - I never get sick or skip out of work unnecessarily - so I was covert and came up with every possible situation to think of.
Come up with other things than being sick or car doesn't start.
I claimed my washing machine flooded at home and I was waiting for the plumber, for example...
