Sugar Ray covered Abracadabra by the Steve Miller Band, and it's really close, so close that what was the point?
My current favorite cover song is Disturbed's (Genesis') Land of Confusion.

I'd have to say that the cover song that was closest to the original was Aerosmith's cover of the Beatle's 'Come Together'. They didn't change a thing. The best cover of all-time is Jimi Hendrix's cover of Bob Dylan's 'All Along the Watchtower'. He blew Dylan's out of the water.

Hurt by Nine Inch Nails is a great song, and Johnny Cash took it and made it appeal to an entirely different audience. It blew the door wide open, and I think that alot of people appreciated Johnny Cash's cover. His version held alot of emotion, just like NIN, but he made it his. If you ask anyone "Who sang 'Hurt'?" They will tell you Johnny Cash, because it means alot, crossing generation gaps, talking about his addictions, and I think he connected with a huge group of people who were feeling the same. If you haven't heard of it, listen to each version. Each version is credible on it's own, but I think Johnny Cash's version touches more people.
