Everyone thinks he's got his own personality.

I personally disagree. He's got his own 'turtle-ality'! *Corny!*. Hahah, it shouldn't matter. Your turtle will do whatever is write for him. I have a turtle I keep in the bathroom and it only comes out when I'm inside...Can't imagine what he'd be like as a human.

Try raising his heat lamp a few inches in his sunbathing/basking spot. It may be too hot for him. You should be able to lay your hand flat beneath it, 2-3 inches from the ground without it being uncomfortable to you. Hope that helps.

You'll have to describe this a bit more... what is its hiding place?

Our job is to offer a good habitat- basking, temps, etc.- with a variety of micro-climates. If we do this well, it will find where it wants to be for different times of its life.

Other than rearranging the tank, I am not sure what the problem is.

Sorry, but it sounds like you got it backwards! He knows what works for him, even though you meant well.
