While there is no magic pill to achieving a better lawn there are some basic steps you can follow that will go a long way in giving you a lush, healthy lawn you'll be proud to walk over. Here then are the 5 basic steps to help anyone achieve a beautiful lawn.

1.Get the mowing height right for the right time of year.
There's more to mowing than just cutting the grass every saturday. One of the most fundamental steps to a perfect lawn is getting the mowing height right for your type of lawn and for the season.
Most grasses do best with a length of 2 - 3". This applies for spring and early fall. In the summer, if possible, set it even higher. Never go below the minimum recommended height except for the last mowing of the season which should be around 1.5" for most turf grasses.
Height is important because the grass uses the extra length to absorb the sunshine it needs to grow and develop into a healthy plant.
Never remove more than 1/3 at any one mowing. This may mean you'll have to mow more often during prime growing times (usually spring and early fall).
Leave the clippings on the lawn after you mow. This not only save time and energy, but the clippings decompose and add vital nutrients back into the soil.

First figure out what kind of grass you have, then get a soil test done. Scotts has a fairly comprehensive lawn care program regardless the type grass you have. Bear in mind if you have a warm season grass, and you live above climate zone 9, it's gonna go brown no matter how much weed killer or fertilizer you put on it. You may just opt for paint like my neighbor did. Now, all winter, he's got a lovely green yard. Never needs mowing either.

1st get a mulcher mower or buy a conversion kit to turn your current mower into a mulcher.I have never used any kind of fertilizer on my lawn/in my flower or garden beds cause the mulcher chops up the grass/leaves into tiny pieces that quickly break down as natural fertilizer. 2nd cut at highest setting. That way your grass is less likely to burn from the intense sunlight. Only sure fire way to stop most weeds from growing is to make your lawn grow THICK to shade out the weeds. A dethatcher will also eliminate some of the weeds although it will make your yard less attractive for a lil while.

My lawn is thick and green even in the winter although I do have creeping charlie that is stubborn as all hell to get rid of.

Hope this helps. :-)

This is an easy one. First of all mow it. Then buy a good quality feed n weed. Feed and weed your lawn and give it plenty of water. Continue to mow and water on a regular basis and feed it once a month. The lawn will be excellent in no time. The other option is to dispose of the lawn, rotovate the soil, rake level and lay a hard wearing turf (for the kids). If you go with turf do not walk on it for about 3 weeks and do not mow it until the roots have penetrated the soil. Oh and keep it well watered. I would go with the first option.

After doing all the right things, including a soil test and chatting up the local feed and seed store, you may have to consider over seeding next fall, with a winter grass, annual rye is cheap but needs to be replanted every year, perenial rye is much more expensive and somewhat pickier about conditions, but when made happy, shows up for the cool months very well, year after year. That's what a lot of golf course people do. Bermuda for summer, rye for winter. Depending on your zone, that might be the only answer.

Depends alot on the type of grass you have. Some go dormant/brown when it gets hot, some do it when days get short. Getting somebody to identify what grass you have is a good first step. Then diversify.
Cutting it too short is a big no-no. 3-4 inch height is minimum for most lawns. Depends on type tho.
And I've found what many people consider weeds (clover, other grasses, ...) actually help my grass look greener longer.

Nice and green all year round? Paint it!! :-) seriously tho..... depending on your location, some lawns go dormant in the winter and turn brown. Chemlawn has done a good job on my lawns at various times. following a good Scott's fertilizer program should also work well.

there are different types of weed and feed you can get to kill the weeds and make your yard green. fertilize in spring summer and fall. pretty simple stuff just read directions on the bag and dont forget to fertilize your plants and shrubs, maybe a 10-10-10 all purpose for them

Use weed & feed. You can buy this at any Home Depot. Make sure to water in well, or do it the day before it rains.
