In the early 20th cent, some African Americans sought to enter general society (in order to beat-whites-at-their-own-game) while other african americans sought to remain a separate faction of American society (in order to advance traditional black-values). Who were the leaders of these 2 sides?

Booker T Washington was the leader of the "join general society" faction, while WEB DuBois was the leader of the "black identity" faction.

Here is a course at Yale on exactly that topic. It provides a good outline of the debate and a good reading list.
