Jacques Marquette & Louis Jolliet "found" Indians living here 1673.
But Haitian immigrant Jean Baptiste Point du Sable settled here in 1779, with his Potawatomi wife Catherine, who was from Peoria. That would probably be considered, if not the founder, at least the first permanent settler.
Did Booker Taliaferro Washington have anything to do with Chicago?
Articles written by William Edward Burghardt Du Bois appeared in the Chicago Defender around 1910 but I don't think he ever set foot here.
That other one you mentioned doesn't care about Chicago, it wasn't her choice for Chicago to be where she got her Lucky Strike.

Chicago's location attracted the attention of many French explorers travelling in the area, such as Louis Jolliet and Henri Joutel, who felt that the area had a great potential as a transportation hub. In 1683, French Jesuits built the Mission of the Guardian Angel to Christianize the local Wea and Miami people, and for a time there was a French fort (Fort Chécagou), commanded by Pierre de Liette.

Don't know who founded it but the name 'Chicago' comes from the Algonquin Indian language meaning 'Place of the Skunk'. Does sound fairly appropriate.
