You have been misinformed. As long as both memory sticks are the same type, meaning they have the same operating speed and same specifications, you should be fine. It is in fact, very common to have 1.25 GB of RAM installed on a notebook computer for example. Notebook manufacturers often provide two RAM slots, where one RAM slot is expandable (that is you can remove the RAM stick from it and replace it with a RAM stick with bigger capacity) and the other one is not. Often both these slots have 256 MB Sticks, and when the owner upgrades there expandable Slot to 1 GB they end up with 1.25 GB of combined RAM.

you'll be fine. as long as ur motherboard is able to detect ur RAM and ur actually able to turn on ur laptop then u shouldn't have any problems.

If your motherboard can detect both RAM modules fine then you will be ok.
