J2SE is Standard Edition, J2EE is Enterprise Edition, which is aimed at multi-tiered environments. JRE is the Java Runtime Environment, which allows you to run Java applications, Java SDK is the Software Development Kit for developing Java applications. The Java Virtual Machine is the software environment in which a Java application runs; you can have multiple instances of the JVM running on the same computer.
