I would also guess it would be a RAM problem. I've actually had this problem with two computers. The first computer didn't have enough RAM, and the second had so many viruses (from using file-share programs and not having adequate virus protection) it didn't have enough RAM to support basic operations.

If you have at least 512MB then you shouldn't have too much to worry about. Less than that, you might think about upgrading.

If you can, try and run a Disc Defrag and Disc Clean-Up. If you can't get that far, you might want to check in to getting your computer restored to factory settings. I had someone do it for $80, and they backed up everything on the hardrive.

Hope that's helpful.

Most likely a hardware issue. Probably RAM or video card. If you have more than 1 stick of RAM in the computer, try removing one or the other and test it out. If you have a card-based video card and your motherboard on on-board - try using the on-board and remove the video card.

Some motherboard manufacturers have diagnosis test software to detect any defects.

If I were a betting man, I'd check the RAM.
