I had to do a similar project when I was in the 8th grade (that was about 15 years ago. Too long!) The myth I made up involved the origin of the telephone's busy signal. It was a bit of a modern variant of the Echo and Narcissus story. There was a girl and boy who were in love and every night the girl would call the boy on the telephone. One day, when the girl called up the boy, he didn't answer. She kept on calling, but he never answered again. She wasted away while waiting for him to pick up so now, whenever a person tries to make a call and someone is talking on the phone, they can still hear her crying, which has turned electronic-sounding. (Yeah, I know it's a pretty immature story. I was 13 years old and obsessed with my first boyfriend. Since many of the conveniences we take for granted today hadn't been invented and call-waiting was not widespread at the time, I often got a busy signal when I'd call him.)

Writing your own myth is a rather fun exercise. Just think of something in your own life that you would like to be explained if you did not have science to explain it for you. That's all myths really are. It can be something commonplace, like "why do roses have thorns?" Or it can be something more modern, like "why do cars spew out noxious gases?" Look at something ordinary as if you have never experienced it before and have no explanation. And then give it one. Good luck!

I wish my teachers gave projects like this! I'd write mine about... the Earth, and how it spins at a certain speed, and one day it spins faster than usual. I'd come up with a reason why, it has to explain something or teach a lesson, because that is the purpose of myths.

You know, one of my friends is doing this HUGE project (like, worth 600 points) on Disneyland. She researched up about disney-lies, and it said that the myth of "There's a storage area in Disneyland underground the refreshment place on Main Street is still there, but no one is allowed to go there because it is cursed and anyone who goes in there will die." and it's true! Scary.

So make it up based on that! Or something.

Or about the myth of [insert strange creature here] starting a hospital or something. Or maybe Bigfoot running a shoe store! Hehe...

I don't want to blow your mind or anything, but everything our world is based on including religion, math and science are based on a belief system....and some would even say myth. Our laws are based on religion, which some say are based on religion. Math and science, are both belief systems....although totally acurate and developed but, they are still belief systems. A good title for your paper that would get some eyebrows to be raised would be "everything you ever believed is based on a myth"...myth...and explain yourself....Your teacher will be beside him/herself.....because it's true...there are not total absolutes in this life.
